Rou-fa (Rotary-Kneading)

 

This is the 2 nd in the sequence. Use the tips of your index and middle fingers on either side of the spine about 1 inch or 1/2 inch  off the spine. Start at the neck and go to the lumbo- sacral junction, always start mat the head and go towards the tail Little circles with light to medium pressure three or 4x , then drag to new spot about an inch away and stop and repeat . Do this until you get to the lower lumbar sacral area. Then repeat about 6x starting at neck and going down.

 

Rou-fa (Rotary-Kneading)

 

 

 

 

Definition:  Rou-fa (Rotary-Kneading) is performed by a gentle touch and rotation movement with the heel of the palm in larger dogs and horses or tips of one or two fingers. Light to medium pressure is applied on the epidermal and superficial dermal tissues. Rou-fa is a soothing and calming technique that may precede more vigorous Tui-Na techniques .

Key points :

  1. The heel of the hand or the ball of the finger, or two fingers should be tightly touching  either side of the spine about 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch away from the spinous process of the spine . Relax the elbow and actively move the forearm with the elbow as a fulcrum.

  2. Performance should be general and rhythmical. Little circles clock wise to stimulate a deficiency or counter clockwise to sedate an excess.  Stay in one spot for 30 seconds , then slide down to the next spot along the spine and repeat. You will not stop at every segment, maybe 5-6 places along the spine +-  . The frequency of this technique should be 120- times/minute, or slower if more comfortable.

  3. Always start on either side of the neck and continue down towards the sacrum . Stope at the lumbo- sacral junction.

  4.  it can be used in other area of the body as well that have Qi blockages.

  5. This technique when used on the back is done front to rear usually about 6 X in a row in combination with other Tui -Na 

Technique actions:

The Yin and Wei Qi are regulated, helps to  unblocks the Qi and Blood which is an excess, extends the chest , helps to eliminate food retention and swelling in the abdomen, and relieves pain.

Clinical applications:

  1. Various points on the whole body.

  2.  Back pain and stiffness, headache, dizziness, insomnia, heart palpitations, heaviness sensation in the chest, distention of the stomach  and hypochondriac regions, constipation and diarrhea, or swelling and pain from an injury.
